Fitness First Opens Its Doors
To Help Get School Kids Active For Free

In an effort to give secondary school students a healthy and active start in life, Fitness First is running a free fitness program called “Adopt a School” in all of its 78 Australian clubs. The Adopt a School (AAS) program provides secondary school students (Years 7 – 12) with exclusive group fitness classes which are run during school hours, by qualified Fitness First instructors. Fitness First fully funds the AAS program so there is no cost to the students, parents or the schools.
Nationally, with 160 schools taking part in the AAS program, over 3000 students are attending 1 – 2 fitness sessions (1 hour per session) each week. In 2008, Fitness First aims to recruit a further 250 schools in an effort to getting more kids, more active, more often.
A range of group fitness classes are offered to the year 7 – 12 students including, Circuits, Body Pump, Body Combat, Cycle, Body Jam and Yoga. The group fitness classes form part of the student’s existing sports / PE syllabus. Fitness First also encourages teachers and supervisors to participate in the classes so everybody can get active and join in the fun.
Georgia Sinclair, Fitness First Adopt a School program coordinator says that Fitness First is concerned with the increasing number of overweight teenagers in Australia.
“Inactivity and poor nutrition are the main factors contributing to Australia’s rising levels of obesity which affects both adults and children,” said Ms Sinclair.
“The number of overweight teenagers has doubled in the last 20 years, mainly because our lifestyles have become more sedentary.
“Fitness First sees the Adopt a School program as a great way for teenagers to try different activities at the gym in a fun, non-competitive environment under the safe watch of a qualified experienced instructor.
“We want to show students that being active really can be fun, plus exercise actually gives them more energy and confidence so they feel good about themselves.”
The Fitness First Adopt a School initiative abides by the Fitness Industry’s “Kids in Gyms” guidelines.
